So you put it in their address book. Five jokes forwarded by email every day don’t lie.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a convincing answer to get you out of the VW striker’s shackles. Your request for email silence is well received and ignored in good faith. Everyone wants to have and have some fun, right?
You don’t have to delete emails manually
Either way, you’ll have to read jokes, great stories, and viral warnings, or delete them right away; or you can let technology do the job.
With a simple filter, Gmail can send all incoming emails from your favorite forwarders to the Trash folder. As an alternative, you can archive and tag these messages for later review.
What if you don’t use the “spam” button to block emails?
It’s a good idea to reserve a ” spam” button to report spam – messages that are often sent in bulk for financial gain and from sources that are not easily identified.
For single senders that have been bothering you, it’s usually best to block them. Read these tips if you receive mail program spam .
Block emails in Gmail
To add senders to Gmail’s blocked senders list and have their messages automatically sent to the spam folder:
Open the message from the sender you want to block.
Click the More menu button (in the header area of the message, press a triangle pointing down ( ▾ ) next to the reply button ).
Note : Using the dialogue ” More” button is easy as it is in the top menu and has “Menu”. Look next to the sender’s name and picture.
Select Block Names from the menu that appears .
Note : For some senders (like Google itself), this menu item won’t show up. You can still use rules to “block” these senders; see below.
Click Block under Block this sender .
Want to block senders and let them get the message you do when you send a new message? You can do this with Gmail filters .
Unblock senders in Gmail
Remove senders from blocked emails in Gmail and send future messages to inbox again instead of spam (unless of course rules catch them, Gmail will flag them as spam for other reasons ):
If you have a message from a sender you want to unblock (you can search for one – including in the spam folder – in Gmail, of course):
1. Open the mail of the sender you want to unblock.
2. Click the More ( ▾ ) button in the email header area .
3. Select Unblock “Name” from the displayed menu .
4.Click Unblock under Unblock this sender
If you don’t have a message from the sender and want to unblock it now:
1.Click the settings gear icon ( ⚙ ) in Gmail.
2.Select Settings from the menu that appears .
3.Go to Filters and Blocked Addresses category.
4.Make sure the sender you want to unblock is selected below . The following senders are blocked.
5.Click Unblock selected senders .
6.Now click Unblock or Unblock this sender under Unblock selected senders .
Block senders with rules in Gmail
To have Gmail automatically send messages from specific senders to the trash using filters you set up and maintain :
- Click the Show search options triangle ( ▾ ) in the Gmail search field .
Enter the desired email address under From :
2. You can block entire domains by typing. To block all mail from user-a@example.com and user-b@example.com, type “@example.com”.
Tip : To block multiple addresses, separate them with “|” (a vertical bar; usually above a backslash on keyboards; do not include quotes). For example, you can block user-a@example.com and user-b@example.com by typing “user-a@example.com | user-b@example.com”.
3. Click Create filter with this search » .
4. Make sure to delete messages matching this search criteria as they arrive .
5. Click Create filter .
- Tip : Check Also apply filter to [__] matching conversations to delete previously received messages.
To archive and label messages instead of deleting them, select Skip inbox (archive) and apply labels: under Choose actions when setting filters .
Of course, you can always unblock people you block with filters in Gmail – or whitelist addresses entirely so they don’t get put into spam.
Add new addresses to your Gmail blocklist rules
To add new senders to your block list, use “|” to add them to an existing delete filter (as above), or if the From : field becomes large and unwieldy, create a new one filter . _ You can find existing filters by clicking the settings gear in Gmail , selecting Settings, then going to the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab .
