pediatric crowns

Dentists mainly use five types of pediatric crowns including stainless steel, resin-veneered, composite strip, zirconia ceramic, and polycarbonate crowns. Each of them has both advantages and disadvantages that suit different needs of the different suitability. Some of the most important features that any dentist chooses before applying a polycarbonate crown or any other crown contain durability, retentiveness, aesthetics, placement time, adaptability, cost, and allergenicity.

Resin Veneer Crowns

Resin veneer crowns are white-facing stainless steel crowns that amalgamate the durability and aesthetics of a stainless steel crown with a resin-facing crown. However, these resin-facing crowns are less sensitive to moisture and hemorrhage during their application. The limited crimpability needs a large original tooth structure removal.

Resin veneer crowns and their installation are comparatively more expensive than stainless steel, polycarbonate crowns, and composite strips.

Advantages of Resin Veneer;

  • Durable
  • Insensitive to moisture
  • Good Aesthetics

Disadvantages of Resin Veneer;

  • Limited crown crimping
  • Expensive
  • Potential allergenicity

Zirconia Ceramic Crowns

Specifically made from zirconium oxide stabilized by yttrium oxide which then gives the name yttria-stabilized zirconia, commonly known as Zirconia Ceramic Crowns.

Some Zirconium ceramic crowns contain the substance porcelain layered on their outer structures and sometimes within their substructures. Zirconium crowns also fall in one of the most expensive crowns and usually cost more than any other normal crown.

Advantages of Zirconia Ceramic crown;

  • Excellent aesthetic
  • Exceptional durability
  • No metal
  • Highly biocompatible
  • Plaque resistance

Disadvantages of Zirconium Ceramic Crowns;

  • Inability to contour
  • Expensive
  • Time-consuming operatory placement

Stainless steel crowns;

Stainless steel crowns have been in dental history since the late 1940s. The blend of chromium, carbon, iron. and other metals are mixed together to form the stainless steel crown. These metals together prevent the crowns from corrosion otherwise, they would have been exacerbated by Saliva. Unluckily, these crowns are not found in the natural tooth color and are used for aesthetic reasons in place of molar teeth.

Advantages of stainless steel crowns;

  • Retentive
  • Durable
  • Low cost
  • Adaptable to occlusion
  • Easy to contour and trim
  • Insensitive to moisture
  • Fast placement time

Disadvantages of Stainless steel crowns;

  • Potential allergenicity
  • Poor aesthetics

Polycarbonate crowns;

Polycarbonate crowns are made with polycarbonate or acrylic resins and are glued together with self-adhesive resin. Polycarbonate crowns are restored in tooth coloration and have aesthetic appearance with low cost.

The first thing that needs to be kept in mind is that polycarbonate crowns are placed for temporary use and their durability varies depending on the application. Polycarbonate crowns are formed in one universal color or natural shade but are customizable with lines and cement.

Advantages of Polycarbonate crowns;

  • Low cost
  • Improved aesthetic

Disadvantages of Polycarbonate crowns;

  • Require moisture control
  • Technique – sensitive

Composite Clearfix crowns;

The composite strip crown application is a bit different from any other crown application. They are applied by using a clear plastic mold and a hardening composite that are susceptible to fracture. Due to the hardening composite residing inside the composite strip crown which sticks to the enamel and dentin, the application becomes sensitive to moisture and hemorrhage.

Advantages of Composite Clearfix Crowns

  • Moderate cost
  • Excellent aesthetics

Disadvantages of Composite ClearFix Crowns;

  • Low durability
  • Required moisture
  • Technique-sensitive
