Lpr And Anpr You Should Know

LPR stands for licence plate recognition and is also acknowledged as an automatic licence number plate recognition system. On the other hand, ANPR stands for automatic number plate recognition. It is also known as:

  • ALPR – Automatic Licence Plate Recognition
  • AVI – Automatic Vehicle Identification
  • LPR – Licence Plate Recognition
  • CPR – Car Plate Recognition

Some of you may have a query on the difference between LPR and ANPR. You need to get an answer to it if the query is making trouble for you. In general, there is no significant difference between these two terms. ANPR and LPR are two distinguished terms to describe the hardware and software that authorities use for recognition of licence plates and capturing the number plates with the use of surveillance cameras.

LPR relates to the description of CCTV cameras that can deal with challenges linked to fog, speed, reflective licence plate materials, and night vision. Now, sophisticated CCTV cameras are available with better sensors and computing power to allow users to get rid of the above-mentioned challenges

ANPR describes the software that has input from an LPR camera and recognises alpha-numeric characters placed on a number plate. After recognition, the analysed data is stored and matched with the available data.

First used in 1976 by the UK police, it helps lower crime rates, especially vehicle thefts and improve traffic management. Further, it helps in the regulation and enforcement of traffic rules due to the presence of speed, red light, triple riding, and lane violation detection modules.

A sophisticated LPR or ANPR system can click the images of the driver with the number plate of a particular vehicle containing images and texts. Backed by infrared cameras, this system can click clear images or record clear videos of moving vehicles during the day and light. In extreme weather conditions such as heavy rain, the system may have working issues.

Advantages of using an LPR or ANPR system

Using an LPR or ANPR system is highly beneficial. Here are some notable benefits of such as system:

Easy to differentiate parking for paid members and non-members

A stop of vehicle theft due to the image click of driver with vehicle number plate

Identification of stolen cars get easier due to the feeding of relative data

Easy to lower traffic congestion with lane management and routes declaration

Permission or negligence to entry and exit becomes easier within an LPR or ANPR system

Conclusion

With a slight difference in work methods, both LPR and ANPR systems are helpful. They ease parking management, crime prevention, traffic management, and enforcement of traffic rules & regulations.
