TRAINING
Getting into the details of the architecture student’s first design critique or the all-nighter in the design lab is unnecessary. However, the training to become an architect is hard work.
Most architects in the USA and Canada complete a Masters of Architecture (M.Arch.) degree from an accredited university.
Although an M.Arch is a training program in technical aspects of construction and building, architects are also trained in design fundamentals. An M.Arch, like other professionals such as engineers and lawyers, is about understanding how to see the world differently and how to solve problems. Students must look at, interpret and reimagine the built environment and the factors that affect and shape people’s lives.
After graduation from an M.Arch program, there is a long mandated internship. It has been in the United States for at least three years. It is designed to give you practical experience in the field. From the time you begin your studies, it takes, on average, 11 years to become an architect.
Because there are not enough practicing architects in the United States, many people don’t have the chance to learn about architecture. There are only 115,316 licensed architects in the United States, as opposed to 1.33 million lawyers (insert lawyer gag here).

DRAFTSPERSON
Drafts people are trained to record how a building is assembled, i.e., how it was constructed. While builders and other trades in the construction industry are skilled at physically making buildings, drafts people are adept at writing instructions that builders and tradespeople use. For example, they can show how a wall section will be built or document the details of a window assembly.
While draftspersons might have taken a few classes in design at college, they do not receive any formal training in the field. The question, “Should I hire an architect or a draftsman?” is often asked. It means hiring both. Some firms have architects who design the homes and drafting technicians who create the construction drawings.
