surgery for undescended testicles

What is an Undescended Testicle?

A condition in which a testicle that is not present in its correct place in the scrotum is known as an undescended testicle or cryptorchidism. Typically, only one testicle is damaged, although around 10% of the time, both testicles remain undescended. An undescended testicle is unusual in general, although it is prevalent in preterm infant males. The undescended testicle usually moves into the appropriate position on its own within the first few months of life. However, if your son’s undescended testicle does not heal on its own, surgery for undescended testicles can move the testicle into the scrotum.

Causes of Undescended Testicles

Doctors are still unaware of the definite cause of this condition. Factors like genetics, maternal health and other environmental fluctuations can lead to hormonal and physical changes. Moreover, some abnormal nerve activity can also affect the development of the testicles. All these factors may become the leading cause of undescended testicles.

Some other risk factors include

  • Low birth weight and premature birth
  • Family history or other problems of genital development
  • Pathological conditions of the fetus that can restrict growth, such as Down syndrome or an abdominal wall defect
  • Excess use of alcohol by the mother during pregnancy
  • Cigarette smoking by the mother or exposure to secondhand smoking
  • Parents’ exposure to some specific pesticides

Complications seen with undescended testicles

Patients face many complications with undescended testicles. The most common complication of them is torsion. Torsion is a condition when the testicle twists and cuts off its own blood supply. However, this condition can even lead to the death of the person. Testicular cancer or infertility in men can be the result of undescended testicles. Trauma and inguinal hernia are also important complications.

Diagnosis of undescended testicles

A pediatric surgeon physically examines the body of the baby for undescended testicles. He checks if the testicles are near the scrotum (palpable) or far from the scrotum (non-palpable). It is fine if they are present there, but if they are not, then some other investigations like scans etc., are options. If they are not present in their exact location, a pediatric surgeon uses keyhole surgery to see where the testicles are actually lying.

Surgery for undescended testicles

A best undescended testicle surgery is performed when the testicles have not descended from the abdomen into the scrotum by six months. An orchiopexy is an option through open surgery, which creates a small incision in the lower abdomen. Another famous and latest method that pediatric surgeons prefer is laparoscopic treatment. A camera and other special instruments are inserted into the abdomen through tiny holes in comparison to an open surgery incision. Before performing any surgery, some investigations like ultrasound are preferable to make sure of the location of the testicles.

Process of Undescended Testicle Surgery

The process of surgery includes different steps. First of all, a pediatric surgeon gives local anesthesia to the baby to emit the pain of the process completely. A surgeon creates a tiny incision in the lower body to see where the testicles are actually. The best pediatric surgeon in Pakistan moves down the testicles smoothly. After that, he stitches testicles into their proper position through a cut in the scrotum. In the end, stitches close all the openings. The baby is treated as an outpatient. Furthermore, after the completion of the process, the child can go home on the same day if his nerves are responsive.

Recovery after Surgery

After surgery, the child may feel tired and restless. The child needs to recover in a crib or bed for a few days. Let your child returns to normal activities when he seems ready or when your doctor says it is okay for him now. It usually happens for 2 or 3 days.
