South Africa’s Red-Ball Camp and Squad Announcement: A Strategic Approach for the West Indies Series

Johannesburg: Red-ball head coach Shukri Conrad has announced a 16-player squad for the two-match Test series against the West Indies, starting on August 7 in Trinidad and Tobago.

Matthew Breetzke, the Dafabet Warriors batter, earns his first Test call-up after an impressive domestic season. He scored 322 runs at an average of 46, including a highest score of 188. He also captained South Africa A in a four-day match against India A in December.

Wicketkeeper-batter Ryan Rickelton returns to the red-ball squad for the first time since South Africa’s home series against the West Indies in March 2023.

All-rounder Marco Jansen will be rested for this series.

The upcoming two-match series, part of the ICC World Test Championship, marks South Africa’s first visit to the Caribbean since their 2-0 series victory in June 2021.

Conrad commented, “We’re excited to return to Test cricket after a busy period of limited-overs games. This tour is crucial for improving our position in the ICC World Test Championship, so we’ve selected our strongest squad and expect solid performances in the Caribbean. Matthew Breetzke joins us after a standout season. Resting Marco Jansen allows him time to recover and maintain peak physical and mental condition given the season’s demands. “Half of our squad will participate in a camp in Durban next week,” Conrad added.

Temba Bavuma, David Bedingham, Matthew Breetzke, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, Tony de Zorzi, Keshav Maharaj,  Aiden Markram, Wiaan Mulder, Lungi Ngidi, Dane Paterson, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada, Tristan Stubbss,  Ryan Rickelton, and Kyle Verreynne.

These players are scheduled to attend a red-ball camp in Durban from July 15 to 19.

The squad will assemble in Trinidad and Tobago on July 27. Players involved in the Major League Cricket final on July 28 will join the team on July 29.
